Alex Galchenyuk Enters NHL Player Assistance Program, Apologizes for Racist Behavior

Subhead: Coyotes forward facing charges following arrest for threatening officers

Details:

Alex Galchenyuk, a forward for the Arizona Coyotes, is entering the NHL and NHLPA's player assistance program following his arrest last week. Sources told ESPN that Galchenyuk has apologized to police for his "deeply disrespectful" behavior during the incident.

According to a police report, Galchenyuk repeatedly used racial slurs towards a police officer in training and threatened to have two officers killed during a traffic stop last weekend. Galchenyuk was reportedly intoxicated at the time of his arrest.

In a statement released on Tuesday, July 14, 2023, Galchenyuk apologized for his actions, calling them "horrific" and "deeply embarrassing." He said he would be entering the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program and would fully cooperate with the authorities.

The Coyotes also released a statement, saying they were "deeply disappointed" by Galchenyuk's behavior and that they would be taking appropriate disciplinary action.

Galchenyuk is facing charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. He is scheduled to appear in court on August 1, 2023.

The NHL and NHLPA player assistance program is a confidential program that provides support and treatment for players who are struggling with mental health, substance abuse, or other personal issues. The program is voluntary, and players can self-refer or be referred by the league or their team.
