Portsmouth Honors 9/11 Victims on Anniversary of Terrorist Attacks

Community Gathers for Remembrance Ceremony

Portsmouth, NH - On the 21st anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the city of Portsmouth came together for a memorial tribute to honor the victims and first responders who lost their lives that tragic day.

Memorial Service at Prescott Park

The main event of the tribute was a memorial service held at Prescott Park, overlooking the Piscataqua River. Mayor Rick Becksted led the ceremony, joined by local officials, members of the Portsmouth Fire and Police Departments, and residents.

During the service, the names of the nearly 3,000 victims were read aloud, followed by a moment of silence.

Keynote Speaker: Survivor of the South Tower

The keynote speaker at the ceremony was Joe Dittmar, a survivor of the South Tower of the World Trade Center. Dittmar shared his firsthand account of the attacks and the resilience he found in the aftermath.

Other Tributes Throughout the City

In addition to the memorial service, other tributes were held throughout the city, including a flag-raising ceremony at City Hall, a wreath-laying at the Firefighters Memorial, and a candlelight vigil at the South Mill Pond.
