Imane Khelif, Algerian Boxer, Wins First Olympic Bout After Opponent Quits
Khelif's Victory Raises Questions About Gender Eligibility in Boxing
Carini Withdrew from the Bout after 46 Seconds
WEB VILLEPINTE, France (AP) - Imane Khelif of Algeria won her opening Olympic boxing bout Thursday when opponent Angela Carini of Italy quit after just 46 seconds.
Khelif's victory comes amid scrutiny of her participation in the women's 66-kilogram division after she failed a gender eligibility test at the world championships.
The Algerian Olympic committee (COA) on Wednesday condemned "baseless attacks" on Khelif, saying she had undergone medical tests that confirmed her eligibility to compete as a woman.
